Courtyard Concerts

A plein-air concert tradition for the contemporary age.

Outdoor concerts have a long and celebrated history. In times past, outdoor concerts were the social events of the day: from the Greeks and Romans with their fantastic amphitheaters and coliseums, to the manicured gardens of European palaces and estates. Today, audiences of all backgrounds can delight in outdoor presentations of classical music in a beautiful setting that is both formal and relaxed. Whether it is Tanglewood in Lenox or the Waldbühne in Berlin, open-air concerts are an egalitarian environment that offers a symbiosis between the natural world and the aesthetic expression in classical music.

Why do a Courtyard Concert?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so much of life has radically transformed from bustling exchange to isolated digital distance. These restrictions on our much needed social life make a compelling case for community cultural events now more than ever before. Though attendance at large concert events may be on a prologued hiatus, live classical music can still be enjoyed in safety.

Classical music aspires to represent the universal meanings of the human experience. While current digital streaming presentations of living art ‘live’ are an innovative and safe solution to the impositions of the pandemic, they are less potent without their most vital component: the public. Great works of art experienced in a communal setting is akin to a group of hikers climbing Mount Everest.  The journey may not always be easy or individually accessible, but mountains are easily scaled as a team, a collective forever changed and bonded together by their experience in reaching the summit!

These outdoor concerts are intended to share great works of musical art so that they may inspire and uplift people to imagine potentials beyond the quotidian: to engage with live performance as an integral part of the process, a process that is a microcosm of the strong community bonds we wish to impart on our public and society.

What are the benefits of a Courtyard Concert?

  • A way to engage with culture through live classical music with COVID safety in mind

  • The fusion between the outdoors, the art music, and the public is representative of the social bonds we share as stewards of our community and earth

  • Music performed en plein air, outside in nature, is good for our well-being: an experience that improves our mental, physical, and emotional health

  • Courtyard Concerts engage all our senses, well beyond the visual experience of screen time

  • These concerts are a family friendly activity that offers a balanced and down-to-earth experience of classical music. It may even inspire your child to develop a love of music, potentially leading to their own musical exploration
